The Dangers of Fast Food

It’s hard to beat all those dollar “value” menus ever present at just about every fast food restaurant these days. You’ll be stuffed full at very little cost to your wallet. However, is there an overlooked cost? And I’m not just talking about obesity and the fact that fast food is packed with sugar, sodium, and fats that add considerably to your waistline. We all know that to be true.

What I’m addressing specifically are the hidden ingredients in what should be fairly simple dishes that ultimately exact a heavy price on our health. Yes, a fast food value meal is much more than meat, bun, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and ketchup. Add to that various artificial coloring (which have been linked as carcinogens), tumor causing preservatives, high fructose corn syrup, monosodium glutamate (MSG), soybean oil, and others, and you have a more well-rounded look at what’s actually going into your stomach. Still sound appetizing?

No wonder the chicken tastes so good!

Let’s take it a step further. Consider processed foods like chicken nuggets for example.* What you think is simply chicken parts dunked in flour batter is only half – yes, 50%! – what you’re consuming with each serving. You are also eating dimethylpolysiloxane, an anti-foaming agent made of silicone (you can find this in cosmetics and Silly Putty). There’s also a whole spoonful of tertiary butylhydroquinone, a form of butane (good old lighter fluid!). Throw in other chemicals in addition to the tried and true sugars, sodium and fats, and you’ve got one hearty, err..lethal, snack!

Sweet poison
And let’s not forget those satisfying sodas. Try these delicious ingredients on for size (seriously, if they don’t kill you, they’ll certainly add to your size). Sodas have been found to contain pesticides up to 300 times the level allowed in tap and bottled water. That’s enough poisonous residue to cause, in the long term, a whole host of diseases and health issues, such as cancer, birth defects, damage to the nervous and reproductive systems and much more. Add to the pesticides other pollutants – some more than others depending on what country your soda is bottled in – like lead, chromium, and cadmium. Keep in mind that Beijing, China actually found Coca-Cola and Pepsi to be among the top 12 factories causing major water pollution in its city. Cities in India have made similar reports. And there’s more. In each soda, you also get a nice dose of sodium benzoate, a preservative and cancerous ingredient that does not belong anywhere near the human body.

Anything but diet
If you’re drinking diet soda, then you get the added benefit of consuming aspartame, an artificial sweetener that does wonderful things in your body once it’s consumed. Namely, your body breaks it down into formaldehyde (the same chemical used to preserve dead bodies), which gets stored in your fat. Artificial sweeteners also give you formic acid and diketopiperazine, two known tumor agents. Besides consuming known carcinogens, artificial sweeteners have also been shown to actually increase your cravings for sugars and other carbs. Yep, they’ve actually been shown to create a greater likelihood of increased weight gain. So much for being a “diet” beverage.

Fast foods take a heavy toll on our health and well-being. Do you need any more reasons why you should be avoiding this fake food starting, well, immediately?
