Theme 2001: Biodiversity and
Management of Invasive Alien Species
The date of the
International Day for Biological Diversity is 29 December. The Theme of
this year is "Biodiversity and Management of
Invasive Alien Species".
The Secretariat of the
Convention on Biological Diversity invites Parties to the Convention and
other Governments and related organizations to observe the International
Day by organizing special events, lectures, presentations and other
substantive activities to mark the occasion. The International Day for
Biological Diversity is an opportunity to strengthen people's commitment
and actions for the conservation of the world's biological diversity.
Today, there is a wide
recognition of the importance and value of biological diversity. But
much more is needed to increase public awareness of the importance of
biological diversity with the ultimate goal of stopping the
ever-increasing loss!
The theme for this
year's International Day is "Biodiversity and Management of Alien
Invasive Species". Invasive alien species are considered to be the most
important threat to biological diversity loss after habitat destruction.
All ecosystems - from forests and grasslands to marshes and coastal
zones - are vulnerable to invasive alien species. Every country in the
world has experienced invasions. Isolated areas such as islands are
particularly vulnerable. |
